Blackfin Tuna and more!

December 27th, 2014
Nolan, Rudy and I trailer down to Hatteras to took advantage of the great offshore forecast and try jigging for Blackfin Tuna. It was slick calm so that made for a quick ride out. It was pretty much non stop catching all day. Unfortunately, the sharks were relentless. It seemed like every third fish we hooked would get "sharked"  (meaning the shark would either eat the whole fish or just bite you off). We caught at least 30 False Albacore, 7 Blackfin Tuna, a handful of seabass, and a stud trigger fish. After getting in we rushed home. To gear up to fish today (December 28th) for one of the two days of the Mid Atlantic Rockfish Shootout.

December 28, 2014
We had bad luck from the start. We woke up this morning and with the tide being so low we couldn't get the boat off the lift. So, with a late start, we finally set out the gear. With not much fish, or bait marks, it didn't look to promising. We made a move and got into some better marks. It wasn't long before we got a bite but we were unsuccessful and the hook later pulled. That seemed to be the name of the game for us today, we pulled the hook off 4 fish and landed one fish around 25 lbs. so with the 2:00 pm deadline and not having anything competitive we called it a day. We headed home to clean the fish from the day before. Congrats to all the winning teams of the Mid Atlantic Rockfish Shootout.

December 17 2014 Some more solid fish! 44.5, 42.3 and 40.5lber

December 17, 2014
The weather man was calling for a solid forecast so I decided to take my friend Melvin and my girlfriend, who is home from VCU for winter break, out to catch some Rockfish! We got onto the water a little after dawn and headed to the ES. With a dentist appointment in my afternoon schedule we knew it would be a short trip. We made our time count! We hooked 4 and kept 3, all citations! All were a really strong size weighing in at 44.5, 42.3, and 40.5 lbs.! After a satisfying catch we reeled in and had intentions of heading home. However, en route we saw some birds and started marking bait and fish. We set out and instantly started catching schooly size fish. We caught about a dozen and kept 3 up to 20 inches. We hurried in with just the right amount of time. Congrats to Melvin and Jordan on their personal best and citations!

There is a good showing of some smaller class fish being caught on the troll. This would be great option to get some meat in your freezer.

December 16.2014 Great fishing had 3 over 40lbs!

December 16.2014
There have been a lot fishing the last 48 hours for me. I mated for Pete and we trolled the river yesterday catching schooly size fish, but plenty of action. We did scratch out a 5 man limit in the mix and our biggest was 31 inches. After getting in from fishing with Pete I had to go give the High Rise another shot so I rushed home and jumped on my buddies boat and we headed out and fished to about midnight in prime current conditions and didn't have a bite so we pulled the plug and headed in. With no plains to fish today, I received a phone call from a friend and was told how good the bite was eeling. He was already heading in with his limit, so I quickly started getting the boat ready and called my Dad and told him he needed to break away from work. Around lunch time my Dad and I headed out and the action didn't take long. In the 4.5 hours we fished my dad got to catch his personal best along with a few other nice size fish. We pulled a couple off and landed 4 total. The smallest fish we caught was 46 inches and we had 3 over 40lbs! The two fish we kept for our limit weighed 41.5lbs & 44lbs. Minus the pouring rain, it was a awesome day enjoying time with my dad.

December 14 2014 Big Striper!

December 14. 2014
Well we didn't get many bites but we did capitalize and accomplished our goal! Both Pat and Sean teamed up this year seeking there Virginia Expert Angler Award. With conflicting work schedules, Sean wasnt able to join us on our last trip where Pat caught his citation Striper. So the goal today was to get Sean a big one. So we headed out and got set up and started grinding it out. We stayed in solid bait and fish marks all day it was just very hit or miss fishing. But we lucked up and Sean landed the stud we were after! The fish taped out a 48" inches with a 31" girth and weighed 48.8lbs! Congratulations again Sean on your 6 citation and your Virginia Expert Angler Award.

December 6 2014 started slow but pulled it off! 48 & 42.5 lber!

December 6 2014
We put our time in and fished hard and fortunately it payed off for us in the long run. Nolan, Rudy, Jon, and I teamed up to fish the 2014 Catching For Kids Rockfish Tournament. The rules stated that "lines in" began at 9:00pm after the captains meeting so we elected to take advantage and fish through the night into the next morning. We fished really hard and battled through some pretty terrible current condition through the whole night and didn't have a single bite. Once the sun came up we headed over to the Eastern Shore to give the second leg of our race a shot. A lot like the night before, there wasnt much going on. We weren't marking much bait and the fish just weren't cooperating for us. But we weren't giving up we kept on grinding it out. We made a couple moves and things started looking up for us with good bait and fish marks we knew it was going to eventually turn on. With not much time left in the tournament we caught the break we were looking for and Jon landed a really nice Rockfish 51.5" 48lbs! So we felt really good that fish would place us in the tournament. With the clock steadly ticking we needed one more nice fish for the 2 fish Calcutta. With less than 15 minutes to spare we were blessed with another really solid fish that was 48" 42.36 lbs We rushed to the weigh in where we were fortunate enought to take first place overall and win the Calcuttas. It was a rewarding trip and another great tournament finish in 2014 with some great friends! Thanks for everyone that help put the tournament together it was for a great cause and I will defiantly be fishing it again next year.

December 3. 2014 Nice Class Fish!

December 3 2014
Today we had Scott, John, Chuck, and Ryan out with us for a business fishing trip. The plan was to get an early start however, with bad traffic and GPS troubles we headed out a little later than we anticipated. Aside from the fog, the calm seas made it a quick and easy ride to the Eastern Shore. We got setup on our first drift and it didn't look too promising. The bait and fish marks were few and far between. So after finishing out that drift we made a move to a different area still in search for bait. We finally came across some decent marks and set out. By working hard and capitalizing on our bites, we were rewarded with some beautiful trophy Rockfish! Our two biggest fish tapped out at 46.5 & 48 inches!  The strong SW wind started kicking up so we called it an early day and headed in. Thanks guys, it was a pleasure having you along!

December 1 2014 Nice Rockfish

December 1 2014
Could not have asked for better conditions in December than what we had today. We had Pat on the boat and with high hopes to catch a trophy Striper, we made or way over to the ES to drift some eels for the first time this year. Unfortunately, our trip started off mildly frustrating with the rubber hook syndrome in full force. Hooks pulling and losing fish seemed be the name of the game for us in the beginning. We stuck it out and turned our luck around accomplishing what we came for! Pat landed a beautiful 44" Striper that we later released to make his 6th citation that earned him his Virginia Expert Angler! Congratulations again Pat, I look forward to fishing with you again soon!

November 24 2014 Quick Rockfish Trip

November 24 2014
Chris gave me a call to see if I wanted to join him on a quick trip in the river before he headed to work this morning. I responded with....are you crazy its blowing 20kts !? A hour later we where heading out. The wind made it challenging but we defiantly got it done. In a hour and half we caught close to 20 Stripers. We kept our limit with the biggest being 25 inches. It was a great time in the River on light tackle thanks again for the invite.

November 22 2014 It was cold but rewarding!

November 22 2014
We decided to do a late night trip after the wind finally fell out. There was defiantly some residual sea that made the first hour of fishing tricky. Once the wind dropped out and the tide got right, the fishing turned on. It was a pretty consistent bite all night with some really nice fish we landed close to 30 fish with around 10 of them being over 30-34 inches and our biggest being 40 inches. Besides the bitter cold it was an awesome night on light tackle!
